Company strategy

Enceladus designs and develops advanced therapeutics based on colloidal drug carriers and therapeutic agents with proven (pre)clinical value. The strengths of our strategy developing a novel, target-selective therapeutics based on components with known pharmacologic profiles are a relatively short development period and a relatively low risk of failure, as compared to e.g. new chemical entities.

Enceladus primary focus is on the early development of different products based on its proprietary drug-carrier combination Nanocort in arthritic conditions, inflammatory bowel disorders, neurological autoimmune diseases and possibly cancer. Acknowledging that a small company is not equipped to deal with large confirmatory clinical trials, Enceladus seeks to license-out its products after demonstration of efficacy and safety in early clinical trials.

Developing Nanocort^®

Enceladus will first develop Nanocort as an improved short-term treatment of inflammatory exacerbations of rheumatoid arthritis. Currently, the first clinical proof of principle trial in rheumatoid arthritis patients is ongoing at the Dept. Rheumatology, University Medical Center Nijmegen, The Netherlands. Trials in other inflammatory diseases are planned for 2008. Meanwhile, plans are under design for a first study with Nanocort in cancer patients.

The company has embarked upon a three-year program with the objective to successfully complete phase II studies that demonstrate the therapeutic superiority of Nanocort over current intervention strategies with parenteral steroids, making it an attractive product for in-licensing by mid-size pharmaceutical or biotechnology companies.

For exacerbations parenteral treatment with steroids is already a standard treatment regimen. Nanocort will therefore be readily accepted while clinical trials for short-term treatment regimens are relatively straightforward. In a later stage more extended trials will be performed aiming at showing benefit at the level of disease modulation.

Other research projects

Using the experience obtained during the pharmaceutical, preclinical and clinical development of Nanocort, Enceladus has dedicated itself to the design of additional promising novel therapeutics. Enceladus is involved in several pharmaceutical and preclinical research projects that generated new therapeutic leads for the treatment of chronic, life-threatening diseases.
