Structure

Enceladus is a low cost operation, obtaining remarkable results with limited means. Its core is formed by the management team, which consists of chief executive and scientific officer, and chief development officer and chief medical officer. The supervisory board oversees the management and is involved in the company’s long term strategy. Its advisory board members provide input from a more scientific and/or clinical perspective.

Involved as shareholders are Clinquest Europe and Iglo Bioventures, the latter acting as the principal investor in the company, while Clinquest also performs clinical trial management and monitoring on behalf of the company. Also involved as shareholder is the Utrecht University, together with which the company further expands its intellectual property portfolio. Finally, an important contribution comes from the pharmacy of the Slotervaart Hospital in Amsterdam where the majority of the pharmaceutical development activities take place.

Management team

Bart Metselaar

Enceladus was founded by Dr Metselaar. He is a registered pharmacist with a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences. The majority of the preclinical studies with Nanocort so far have been performed under his supervision. He has a large network of collaborations with different disciplines in the Utrecht University, but also in other Dutch and foreign academic institutes. Dr Metselaar is responsible for day-to-day management and for Enceladus’ scientific programs.

Rian van Meeteren

As the company’s CDO, Dr Van Meeteren manages the product development projects within the company. Dr Van Meeteren has been trained as a biochemist and holds a PhD from Leiden University. Since 1983 he has worked in the pharmaceutical industry, holding leading positions in marketing, general management, research and development and quality management with Boehringer Ingelheim, Gist Brocades and Yamanouchi.

Cees Wortel

As the company’s CMO, Dr Wortel oversees the design and execution of the clinical trials. Dr Wortel has more than 15 years of experience in the development of biopharmaceuticals and innovative medical technologies and in international academic and industrial pharmaceutical research. Dr. Wortel is also internationally recognized for his expertise in the design and analysis of clinical trials. Dr. Wortel previously served as senior executive for medical research at various biopharmaceutical companies, such as Centocor, Repligen, Procept, and Alkermes.

Supervisory board

Peter van Brummelen

Prof Van Brummelen brings a wealth of experience to his position from both the pharmaceutical industry and as a clinician. Prof Van Brummelen held various staff positions in the Dept of Internal Medicine (Leiden University Medical Center) between 1974 and 1988. He was global head of the Dept of Clinical Pharmacology at Hoffman-La Roche and professor of medicine (Basel, Switzerland). From 1998 until 2003, he was Executive Vice President R&D of Yamanouchi Europe (now Astellas). Currently he is an independent board member of several biotech companies and a global drug development consultant to the pharmaceutical industry.

Oscar Schoots

Dr Schoots has been working for University Utrecht Holding BV as of 2002. His responsibilities include the patent portfolio and technology transfer activities from the Utrecht University (UU) and Medical Center (UMC). At this position he has been involved in the incorporation of several spin off companies. In the past he performed several academic research projects, worked for hospitals and their spin offs, for venture capitalists and the industry. He further broadened his expertise by obtaining his MBA in 2002 (Bradford University/NIMBAS).

Erik van den Heuvel

Mr Van den Heuvel is an independent advisor on business development and human resource management. He has been hired by Clinquest in managing positions since 2005.

Gert Storm

Prof Storm advises the company on new advanced drug delivery technologies. He is head of Drug-targeting Division, Dept Pharmaceutics, Utrecht University.

Piet van Riel

Prof Van Riel is an internationally renown specialist in the field of rheumatic diseases. He advises on clinical aspects of drug development. He is head of the Dept of Rheumatology, University Medical Center Nijmegen.

Ralf Gold

Prof Gold is Chair of the Dept of Neurology of the St Josef-Hospital/Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany. He brings in a wealth of knowledge on the treatment of neurological autoimmune disorders.
