Enceladus is a young and small-scale drug development company. Enceladus introduces Nanocort, a liposomal pharmaceutical that contains anti-inflammatory corticosteroid and selectively targets the actual sites of pathology in severe inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and multiple sclerosis (MS), and in cancer.

Nanocort may offer a novel, highly effective therapeutic intervention strategy. In a range of experimental disease models it was shown that intravenous treatment results in selective accumulation in diseased areas in the body. Consequently, a dramatic intensity and durability of the therapeutic effect was shown, with minimal adverse effects.

Enceladus originates from and is embedded in an extensive academic network with strong expertise and interest in colloidal drug carriers for the design of advanced therapeutics. The company has a product-oriented view and aims at finding inventive combinations of active ingredients and drug carrier systems that are effective, safe and straightforward.

Currently Enceladus focuses on the development of Nanocort for severe inflammatory conditions and cancer. Nanocort is first developed as an intervention treatment for acute exacerbations of rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. The first clinical proof of principle trial in rheumatoid patients is ongoing at the Radboud UMCN in The Netherlands.

Mission

In Greek and Roman mythology, Enceladus is the name of a rebellious giant, a fighter who opposed the rule of Zeus over the mount Olympus. In response, Zeus managed to defeat Enceladus and chained him underneath Mount Etna on Sicily. Even today the presence of the giant can be felt when Mount Etna starts hissing again thrusting out his fiery tongue.

Volcanic eruptions show striking resemblance to ‘flares’, exacerbations of inflammation that many patients with inflammatory disorders have to cope with. Both are devastating phenomena, often unpredictable while posing a constant threat. Silencing the tyrant, keeping the instigator under control, is the mission of our company.
